Course Description

This course is designed to teach the student how to develop a repertoire book with a minimum of 3 songs in their correct key and create simple arrangements.  Students will have an opportunity to practice singing with a live jazz combo for part of the course, learn vocal interpretation and improvisation (scat), develop performance and microphone skills, and learn how to lead the band – all while activating the creative process.  Through structured exercises, students apply what they have learned - culminating in a live concert performance at a New York City venue with a live trio (piano, bass, drum) accompaniment.

The course is comprised of 3 sections:

  • Part 1: Course is devoted to preparation of musical material and singing with piano accompaniment

  • Part 2: Singing with a piano and bass and then rehearsing with piano, bass, and drums (Rhythm Section)

  • Part 3: Culminating in a performance at a New York City venue and audience reception following the show.
