Course Description
This course is designed to teach the student how to
develop a repertoire book with a minimum of 3 songs in their correct
key and create simple arrangements. Students
will have an opportunity to practice singing with a live jazz combo for part
of the course, learn vocal interpretation and improvisation (scat), develop
performance and microphone skills, and learn how to lead the band – all
while activating the creative process. Through structured exercises,
students apply what they have learned - culminating in a live concert performance
at a New York City venue with a live trio (piano, bass, drum) accompaniment.
The course is comprised of 3 sections:
- Part 1: Course is devoted to preparation of musical
material and singing with piano accompaniment
- Part 2: Singing with a piano and bass and then
rehearsing with piano, bass, and drums (Rhythm
Section)
- Part 3: Culminating in a performance at a
New York City venue and audience reception following the show.
Performance-Based
Objectives
After completing the Vocal
Jazz Workshop – Level
2 course,
you will be able to:
- Create a simple
arrangement for your song
- Prepare your charts for the band
rehearsal
- Know the secrets to successfully
leading the band
- Gain microphone technique skills
- Interpret the song based on your
creative explorations
- Vocally improvise on the melody
- Begin to Scat - improvise your own
melody to the chord progression
Course Prerequisites
Vocal technique training, basic
musicianship (knowledge of scales, chords and rhythms), All That
Jazz… Singing Workshop – Level
1 or equivalent knowledge. Attendance is with Instructor approval.

Advanced-beginner to intermediate singers

Requirements
- Portable equipment for recording
the sessions for practice outside of class during the week
- Access to sheet music - songs will
be determined as part of the class
- Textbook: None. There will be reading
lists and repertoire lists as part of the course materials.
NOTE : Class
handout materials are included in the cost of this course. Any
Textbook or Learning Guide required for this course will be a separate
cost.
Delivery Method
and Activity Time
Instructor-led, group-paced, classroom delivery
with structured activities and lots of actual singing.
Collaborative, Internet-based message board and class web site.
Performance Repertoire
3 songs chosen by the student
Individual Prep Time
Minimum 1-2 hour per day of vocalizing and
song practice recommended.
Additional 1 hour per week for writing out lead sheets of songs and arrangements
for the band.
NOTE : Vocalizing sessions
should not be
longer than 1-hour intervals to protect the voice.
